Hey Friends,

I hope you are all well in isolation, staying healthy and positive.

I've got a new song coming out called "I'm Sorry, I Love You". It was produced by Nathan Yaccino and features Abby Gundersen as a backing vocalist.

I recorded this song in 2018 and am happy to finally be releasing it. It focuses on how we should two important phrases "I'm Sorry" and "I love you" in our most important relationships. This song was a response to past personal failures in relationships as well as hopes for better future relationships. It also includes an apology to an ex-girlfriend.

I also wanted to release this song first because of the many arguments and fights that may be occurring during isolation and the healing needed for many.

I'm very excited for all of you to hear it. It will be released Friday May 8, 2020. It will be distributed by AWAL to all major streaming services including Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Google Music, and many more. Please subscribe and listen to my music on your preferred streaming service!

Cheers,

Hey Friends,

It was beautiful yesterday visiting Whidbey Island for the first time. My family and I had a cabin in the San Juan islands, so poor old Whidbey Island was always passed by when I was a child. Such a beautiful place with some good Washington State history. Above is a picture from the drive to Deception Pass.

Regarding music updates, I'm still in the studio and recording more songs and things are going well.

Hope you're well.

Summer of 2016 I played this slightly altered version of the Death Cab For Cutie song "I Will Follow You Into The Dark" for Jay and Katy's first dance at their wedding. She asked me to record it for him as a 30th birthday present. I've edited out my personal comments (minus a hair swipe at the beginning) and wanted to share the song with you. I hope you enjoy it.

Short story: This video represents the best times of my life over the past two and a half years. Filmed and edited by my good friend and camera man Aaron Sampson

Long Story:
I never wanted to leave England. In fact, I fully expected to live out the remainder of my days there. As many of you know, outside of music I worked for a software company. They held my visa which allowed me to work AND play music in the UK. I think it was early June 2016 that they told me that my job would be moved to Poland (where they would be able to hire 2 or almost 3 people for the price of 1 in the UK) by the end of the year. I was ashamed, disappointed, and in shock (and denial) over the news.

Long story short, the effects of not dealing with this appropriately lead to becoming quite withdrawn, sad, and depressed in subsequent months. My life was, for all intents and purposes, ending. To compound the issue, I made a lot of mistakes and hurt those I loved the most and cared about. In the end, the months of August and September 2016 were the darkest months of my life.

This completely overshadowed the great joy, love, and connection I felt with audiences at every show. The love I have for songwriting, co-writing, and their processes. The amazing memories the band and I had built over the last two and a half years. The happiness of England. Everything tainted because of a seemingly crumbling future, poor self control and self restraint, addiction, and loss.

This video represents the best times of my life over the past two and a half years; from early shows at the bedford to festivals playing for thousands of people to a music tour in Canada. I want to thank you again for all of your love and support over the years. So many thanks to my friend Aaron Sampson to filmed and edited all the clips you see.

I've been in Seattle, Washington now for four and a half months. I've not yet played an open mic yet, but I promise to soon. More covers and home videos will be coming soon as well. Thanks for sticking with me. I hope you are well.

All the best,
Tom Butler
Tom Butlertag:tombutlersings.com,2005:Post/43835142016-09-21T20:47:46+01:002017-01-14T19:17:10+00:00New Album - Tom Butler - HighwayHey Everyone,

I'm releasing a new album very soon and I'm very proud of how it has come out.
Tom here. Wow! What a week it's been, but I'm here just to report on the amazing experience the band and I had at the Greenbelt Festival up in Kettering at the Boughton House. I played a solo set on Saturday August 29. I want to express a sincere 'Thank You' to all of you who listened and were in attendance. In a summary, the compere said "Go see Tom Butler tomorrow at the big top if you want to hear great music and average chat". We had so much fun and I really learned a lot about how to entertain and connect with a large crowd. I felt like there over 1,000 people. Could have been 500. I think there were at least 500 :) The Greenbelt staff were so kind and helpful, it made our lives as musicians and artists so much easier. We couldn't have had such a good gig without the wonderful people who put on the festival. Specifically Katherine from the programming / artist liaison is responsible for us being there! Thanks Katherine! Anyway, it was an amazing show and really fun atmosphere. I highly encourage everyone to check out the Greenbelt Festival next year!

I don't know why it took so long for me to get around to writing about my experience at Glastonbury Festival. It was absolutely amazing and I met some very wonderful people. Overall, my stay was very very simple. I had a few impromptu performances, but performed twice officially on the PRS For Music VIP stage. Unfortunately, because of permissions and rights issues with the BBC, getting the footage to the performances has been difficult, but I'll post what I can when I get my hands on it. This is no fault of any organization, but I'm just explaining why I don't have videos.

I played my first set on Saturday June 27 around noon. It was amazing. I played a Ho Hey, Malea, Boats, I Won't Give Up, and Heart. The PRS For Music Commercial Director liked my set so much that he asked me to come back and play again on Sunday night. Everything has improved dramatically over the past weeks and I'm so thankful for your love and support. I'm working to prioritise my life the best I can- putting God and Family first (...this is starting to sound like a country song #facepalm). But seriously, God has blessed me so much and I'm grateful for the gifts and talents he's given me during my time here on Earth. I believe he wants me use my talents for good.

I'm also grateful to have such loving friends that support and push me to be the best I can. I've moved house and made an effort to get involved at church. I removed a lot of toxic relationships from my life: negativity, enabling, etc etc. Right now I feel like I'm surrounded by some of the best people I've ever met.

Fighting Addiction

About 9ish weeks ago I began attending an addiction recovery course. For lots of reasons I won't give too much detail on this (at least not yet). However, it suffices to say that I've been battling addiction since I was 12 years old. I've been clean now for about 10+ weeks. I'm really proud about this
even though it might not seem like that long. I am confident that I will not fall off the wagon this time. I've never been more focused on it nor vocal about it. Your prayers and support have helped so much and I'm grateful for your support and love.

What about music?

Shortly before the hiatus, I flew across the world with my band to play Canadian Music Week (which was a phenomenal experience), Liverpool's iconic Cavern Club (and the Cavern Pub too!), and London's historic Trafalgar Square. During my 'hiatus' I played the most prestigious music festival in the world: Glastonbury! I loved every performance, every audience and all the kind people along the way that made it all possible.

Tom Butler at Glastonbury

The hiatus has taught me that music is part of my being. It's in my bones and soul. I love to perform, write, share, listen to, and talk about music because it deeply affects me as an individual and connects with so many people in around the world. There is too much good in music to ever let it go. This must have been obvious to many, but I don't think it was "the music" or the "music industry" that made my life decisions for me. I made my choices and have to deal with the consequences. I'm working through that now.

I'm going to be conservative and hold back on any real commitments about when I'll be fully back and on the scene. BUT! I don't think it will be too long.

Again, thanks for your loving support. I love and appreciate all of you. A full Glastonbury report is coming soon!

Cheers,

Tom Butler

ps. Feel free to comment your questions or thoughts below. Last year culminated in big highs and huge lows: putting a band together (which is amazing), winning a songwriting award, inactivity at church and losing the most cherished friendship and relationship I’ve ever had in my life. I played so many shows to many happy faces only to walk home alone and indulge in addictive behaviour. This year has only brought further personal let down and trials. It seems in every conversation I can honestly say “Music is going really, but everything else kinda sucks”. I’ve always put music before my personal well-being. I’ve been convinced by the industry that losing myself in music is how I can truly become the best musician or how I will have the biggest chance for success.

I’ve been working hard over the past couple years to become a great musician. Today marks my shift towards trying to become a great person. To become a better person I honestly believe that a connection with God is fundamental, needed and necessary and I’m going to work on that relationship for a while. My spiritual foundation has been shaky for years, but I’m done sending mixed messages to everyone about my priorities in life. I’m going to be doing my best to put God first again and to love everyone around me.

I am not announcing that I will never play music again, but I am going to take a break to balance out my life. Then I will slowly re-add music back into the mix in a balanced way. I love music. I love the friendships I’ve built with it and I love the songwriting process and all the creativity that goes into it. I’ll never stop writing songs.

For those who don’t know, here are some things I love outside of music: the Spanish language, travelling, board games, movies, sports.

For future goals, honestly my biggest one is to someday become a kick-ass father that gives everything to his wife and kids (this honestly always has been my biggest goal for years, but I’ve done little to get there).

This is a huge post, but important for me to get out there. I love each of you and hope you can understand where I’m coming from and show some support for me as I make this decision in my life.

Sincerely,
Tom Butler

ps.
Quick Recap: New York City is overall a pretty safe place!

I currently live in London and was pretty nervous about my first trip to the Big Apple. People tols me that the subway was dirty and and smelly (which I'm sure is more of an isssue during the muggy summer months). During this winter Christmas season, however, the subway was just your basic run of the mill dirty-ish subway.

Quick question for those in New York: is the water under the tracks a result of Hurricane Sandy?

Some of you might be thinking, were there rats in the subway? Yes. Were the rats as big as small dogs? No.

My trip passed like a lightning strike with a bunch of glorious branches that were the incredible encounters I had.

I flew in on Thursday Dec 11 and took a dial 7 cab to Desmond's tavern on Park Avenue South where I was to play my debut NYC acoustic set. After the little last minute marketing I did (thinking that no one would possibly care about my little concert, I was happy to have five dedicated fans that showed up to see me specifically. 3 girls flew up from North Carolina for the show (shout out to the amazing Abreu family!!) and Jennifer and her mom who had seen me busking in London and kept up to date with my where abouts via Facebook. I am so blessed to have such dedicated fans.

Also during the show (this never happens in London) a girl threw card onto the stage. On the back was her phone number and the message "nice sad songs".

Friday December 12 (Day 2) - I slept in and then went and had a writing session with the amazing Alex Forbes. We wrote a solid song together that I'm excited to show you over the coming months. I think you're really gonna like it.

Saturday December 13 (Day 3) I began an amazing co-writing session with Valerie Broussard (if you've not checked out her music, CHECK IT OUT HERE because it's amazing and she's got a killer voice), Jeff Franzel (who I've mentioned before, he's an amazing person, pianist and songwriter who has written with N*SYNC and had a few top 10 hits), and producer Michael Spivack (who I met for the first time on this trip and proved to be an amazing songwriter and lyricist, in addition to an awesome person.

I also got the chance in the evening to go out and try some of the local food. New York night life is much like London night life except no curfew because the subway is (somewhat) 24/7.

Sunday December 14 (Day 4) I stopped by LDS church near the Lincoln Center on my way to another day with Valerie, Jeff, and Mike. We finished the song and honestly I'm so stoked about this song. We finished the song before 2pm. In the evening I made my way over to Brooklyn where I visited Cariad Harmon (an amazing Folk Singer Songwriter with a beautiful voice, guitar skills, and an amazing new album that she just put out). Within two hours we had a brand new song. It was brilliant. Then I accompanied her and her guitarist to amazing Mexican food before their resident show at the Rockwood Music Hall (amazing music venue in the lower east side). She plays every Sunday night at midnight (starting backup in January 2015). Her performance was absolutely amazing. I was blown away by the skill and cohesive nature of her and her band. They all played together and really put Cariad on a pedestal. It was an amazing show. Then I caught a taxi home.

Monday December 15 (Day 5) I had the wonderful opportunity of seeing my cousin Nikki (who I honestly forgot lived in New York). She's an accomplished painter and artist. It was great to catch up with her.

I then visited Time Square. I got a Hot Chocolate from Starbucks, sang a Christmas song with the LDS missionaries who were in the square sharing a message about Christmas, and then walked back up to Central Park and played guitar. At the park, two passing girls asked me to play a song. I played Jason Mraz's "I won't give up" and they loved it. Then I caught the subway to JFK and flew to London.

Such a remarkable trip. I also need to say a huge thanks to the Hughes family for opening their home and letting me stay while I was there. You made the whole trip possible!
Tom Butlertag:tombutlersings.com,2005:Post/34050342014-12-16T18:21:54+00:002017-01-14T19:17:09+00:00The Bedford Gigs 2014 Reunion ShowI've been buzzing all day from playing the #gigs2014 GIGS: Big Busk reunion show last night at The Bedford The Bedford Live!! It's been a Rollercoaster of the past two weeks filled with highs and lows. I'll try to write less, put more pictures etc. On October 4, I left for Berlin at 6AM (without sleep) from London. I saw checkpoint Charlie and a McDonalds (didn't eat there, just thought I'd tell you that I saw one). I took an 8 hour train to Innsbrook. I stayed at a Hostel where I made lots of friends and met someone 2 years younger that went to my SAME HIGH SCHOOL!

Then I went to the Songwriting Camp which was in a beautiful area of Tyrol called Achenkirch. Beautiful little town on a lake.

I met and became life-long friends with so many amazing musicians, artists, and producers at the camp. The first was my room mate (Producer, multi-instrumentalists, singer, songwriter) Erik Sjoholm:

Erik and I began 4 songs and finished 2 of them at the camp. He's coming to visit in early November.

Tuesday October 7 - I wrote an amazing song called "Stop Ourselves" with a brilliant songwriter and friend Valerie Broussard. Definitely take a listen to Valerie's music and keep track of her rise in music. I think she's going to be big. Amazing voice and exceptional songwriter! Message me if you'd like to hear the song we wrote. I'll send you a private link to the song on Soundcloud.

Wednesday October 8 - I wrote my first dance song with 3 brilliant Austrian songwriters: Alex Stenitzer (Songwriter and Producer) and Austrian brothers sensation Nico & Laurin. Fun fact: Laurin was on The Voice Kids 2013 for Germany. All three guys, brilliant.

Thursday October 9 - I wrote a song on my own and performed 'Heart' at the evening showcase.

Friday October 10 - I began a brilliant song with phenomenal songwriter and pianist Jeff Franzel and producer Sebastien Geisler. We couldn't finish it like we wanted so brought Valerie Broussard on board and finished out the song later on Saturday.

Saturday October 10 - I wrote a song called 'Should've been' with Erik Sjoholm and Ria. Exciting news: both are coming to London and we are writing for about a week and a half. So stoked.

Sunday October 11 - Flew home

Tuesday October 13 - Played Ronnie Scott's in London with Valerie Broussard

Wednesday October 14 - Played Drury Club in London with Johnny Lucas

Thursday Oct 15 - Played an open mic in Guildford

Friday OCt 16 - Played a party in north London.

#lotsofmusic

Talk to you all later.

Cheers,

Tom

Tom Butlertag:tombutlersings.com,2005:Post/32314992014-10-14T14:20:45+01:002017-01-14T19:17:07+00:00MALEA MUSIC VIDEO

It started out with an excellent date night (no, I'm not going to expound), but then Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday saw the best band practices yet. It would be remiss not to mention the fortune we've experienced of good weather in London recently. ** enough of the accent

How are you doing? I hope you've been living up the summer festival season. I'm sure many of you have found new bands, so if so let me know who you're listening to, I love finding out about new music. Recently I've been involved with the London Mayor's Gigs 2014 Busking competition. THANK YOU SO MUCH for all of your votes. I really appreciate the support and I will report back soon about the status of the gigs. But seriously, thank you so much.

What have I been up to recently (non-music wise)? Well I've been studying my toosh (aka Bottom or Butt) off for an exam that I honestly didn't do very well on. I am retaking it in a bit, which I feel confident about passing on the second go round. For those familiar with this, it was my first Microsoft exam ever.

Anyway, moving on. I'm really excited to be putting my full efforts back into music and have many exciting things coming your way in the following forms:

More Music Blog entries

More Videos (with the help of Aaron Sampson and Stu)

More Shows around the UK and Europe (if you want the band or myself to come play at your house or a venue near you, let us know)

More New Music

More, more, more, more! (That's what she said #hilarious) My mind has been teeming with music ideas etc for the past few weeks and I'm excited to unleash the energy. I will be sharing more ideas about new artists, old artists, all in or out of this folky genre. I know you'll be into it.

Videos are going to be a lot of fun to release as well. Recently we released a few to very good reviews ( Country Roads, Folsom Prison (fan video, thanks Jenny L. for the upload)). We've got a few more videos pending release and we're stoked to release them.

We don't want to overwhelm London with shows so we will be marketing them sparingly, however the next really big one to watch for is the August 15 show at the London Aloft Excel (swanky hotel in east London). This show will be with a FULL BAND. We'll be all ready to show you the full potential of the songs on the EP as well as others and maybe a cover or two. It's going to be a good one. Be there!

Also, we'd be down to play some house shows, so if you're looking to have friends over and want to impress them, drop me a line (with some notice) and we'll see what we can do.

I've been writing songs all year and look to record more of them soon. The timelines are tentative, but I hope to have the Heart single out this year. So that will be really exciting. Can't wait.

This was just a little update for you. Tonight at the London Folkfest at the Bedford in Balham we were fortunate to play with Steph Fraser, Evanjack (Scott Cousins), and Mixed Doubles (comedy group).

Stephanie Fraser

Where are you from?
Blackpool

Is this your first time playing at the London Folkfest?
No, I came to listen last year and they brought me on stage. And now I'm here again.

When did you start playing music?
I started playing guitar when I was five and then I heard Eve Cassidy when I was 12 and thought why can't I do that so I did.

What's been the most interesting thing that's happened to you on stage at a show?
Don't know, I played to a crowd of 20,000 people once in Blackpool . That was interesting. I was 14. There loads of bands including McFly.

Here's what I thought about Stephanie Fraser?
I think she's an excellent singer and songwriter. To me, her voice is similar to Laura Marling in the sense of her being so young and sounding so wise. She also has so much control over her voice. She can sing high and low and has catchy melodies with good song structure. I'm looking forward to possibly doing some writing sessions with her later this week. I'll try and keep you posted on that. Also a very genial person, easy to talk to, and doesn't take herself too seriously.

Want to know more about Stephanie Fraser? He used to play me old Bob Dylan and John Denver songs.

What instruments do you play?
I play guitar and a bit of piano. I can't read music and not had theory lessons, but if I got time with anything I think I could make some decent noises.

What are you most excited about tonight?
My band recently broke up. So I'm playing some new stuff, some of my own songs?

Is one of your new songs the song with the mallet?
No, that's an old song called "Woods into blindness"
Watch it here:http://youtu.be/6LUECHGya48 (It's a great song).

What's the coolest experience you've had in playing music?
I got play Glastonbury in one small stages up in the green field. It was a charity called Music For Children (http://music4children.org/) who had a little tent. So I played that. But it was great cause all of my friends were there, so yeah, it Thursday night and it was great.

Here's what I liked about Evanjack:
I told him all of this. I loved how Evanjack created moments long enough to live in. Very emotion driving music. Creating a musical canvas and then painting on it with his voice (Like Bon Iver esque)... Whether you understand me or not, it is fine to say that he is an excellent musician. He played two different guitars over the night and brought a wonderful Marshall Amp (same brand as the first amp I ever owned).

Want to know more about Evanjack? Routine Sauna. You had your pants off once? Yeah, I played a flasher bumps into his old friend from Uni and she recognizes me and we hit it off... Something about Will with sun cream.

What are you looking forward to most about tonight here at vin's Night In At The Folkfest?
We love doing Vin's Night In, they are lovely gigs. It looks so nice in there. The last time we were in this room was for a mixed bill comedy night that we'd rather forget. (Basically to leave tonight with good memories).

My Personal Thoughts about Mixed Doubles:

Besides being very nice people to talk to and very good-natured, they were also a bundle of acting and comedy talent. I saw their 15 minutes skit for the musical intermission and it was amazing! They performed a variety of hilarious situations. They also had AMAZING scene-transition music ranging from the Beastie Boys to HAIM (Great choices guys). They also weren't unnecessarily vulgar (AKA They weren't using the F-word for no other reason than to appear relevant). It was a very funny act all around! Very versatile! I enjoyed their act, talent, and humour. Great job!

Want to know more about Mixed Doubles (The comedy group, not the type of team tennis)? In talking with my sister today, she asked me the following question: What is an EP? Well in this article I will explain it all to you, but for now let's take a look at the beautiful album art put of my upcoming EP:

Photography & Album Art by Ev Sekkides

EP is an acronym that stands for 'Extended Play'. It is a disc or vinyl that has more songs than a Single (1-2 songs, sometimes referred to as an A & B side), but less songs than a full length album ( which are usually at least 8 or 9 songs). There are probably many different names for the same thing in this case. According to Yahoo Answers an EP is "like a mini-album with only 5 or 6 songs on it." Wikipedia explains an EP a "musical recording that contains more music than a single, but is usually too short to qualify as a full studio album or LP."

Here is what EPs looked like back in the day (in olden times before the internet):

Last night, however, in east choir seats of the Royal Albert Hall I became a fan of Ed Sheeran.

Here's why:

He kept a 5000+ person crowd entertained for 2 straight hours with only a guitar, a voice, and a loop pedal (MAIN REASON)

He has a unique style that meshes rap with folk (which is not easy)

He is well practised and has put a lot of time into his trade and art

He is authentic (he told us about the phony encore)

He is positive and happy

Furthermore, he played a song with Passenger last night called "Hearts on Fire".
I've listened to NPR (National Public Radio, in the USA) since I was a baby. My mom and dad always had it on. NPR now puts on a cool concert series called the NPR Tiny Desk Concert Series. One really good band I've found via NPR TDCS is Lowland Hum.
Happy Tuesday Everyone:

Just wanted to share a bit about an amazing musician and song that I've come across quite recently. Her name is Birdy. She is 17 and has been wowing the international music community with her heartfelt covers of amazing songs, such as Phoenix's 1901 and the Postal Service's The District Sleeps Alone Tonight. She has an amazing voice and a lot of talent.

Kiri and Andrew did the same thing. They also came along to the correct venue after. THANK YOU! Thank you! Thank you! I'm so happy to have dedicated fans and friends. I've played concerts at music venues around London, and one of my favorite places to play music is at The Bedford. Today I'd like to share some more music with you. Living in London makes it hard to go to their shows these days, but their music is absolutely amazing. Fictionist is an American Rock band made up of Excellent musicians Aaron Anderson, Robbie Connolly, Jacob Jones, Brandon Kitterman, and Stuart Maxfield. I grew up around their music and have followed them since I was 15 or 16 years old. I've been lucky enough to open a few shows for them. They bring a modern twist to Pink Floydish space rock. Absolutely phenomenal musicians and people.

They were signed to Atlantic Records relatively recently and are due to release a full length album soon.
I was introduced to Mason Jennings in high school. I can truly say that Mason Jennings' music altered the course of my music and allowed to me to overcome many songwriting barriers that I was dealing with as a teenager. His lyrics and simplicity really appeal to me. I've been to many of his concerts and have been lucky enough to meet him a few times over the years. Here's a pic after a show in Salt Lake City (where Dad and I subsequently had front row tickets). It was amazing.

Some of my favourite (favorite for the US-English readers) songs by Mason Jennings are:
